British Gas Energy Trust

The British Gas Energy Trust is a registered charity, operating since 2004, to help individuals and families in poverty, suffering or other distress who are struggling to pay their gas and/or electricity debts. Applications to the Trust are welcomed from anyone living within England, Scotland or Wales.

The aim of the Trust is to give vulnerable families and individuals a fresh start enabling them to remain debt free going forward. Applicants are strongly advised to seek money/debt advice before applying to the Trust to increase their chance of a successful application.

  • Trust-funded organisations across Britain provide a wide range of specialist fuel and debt advice services.
  • The Better Off Calculator is a tool to help you better understand your income and outgoings, and to provide access to any support you may be entitled to.
  • The British Gas Energy Trust operate two energy debt write-off funds.The Individuals and Families Fund - Open to pre-payment meter customers of British Gas and other energy suppliers.The Energy Support Fund is now closed. All applications submitted prior to 31st March 2026 will be assessed in due course.
