What do we mean when we say 'carer'?
A carer is a person who looks after or supports someone else who needs help with their day-to-day life because of age, long-term illness, disability or mental health problems. Carers are unpaid and may be family members, partners, friends or neighbours.
What is the carers' emergency card scheme?
It is a scheme for carers who are worried about what would happen if they were taken ill or if another emergency stopped them from getting to the person they care for.
The scheme is run by Careline Telecare and operates 24 hours a day.
How does the scheme work?
Careline Telecare, will work with you, the carer, to set up an emergency plan.
This will hold:

Your details
-
The details of the person you care for.

Details of up to three people to contact in an emergency

Details of someone who keeps keys to the home of the person you care for
Carers' emergency card
Once you have agreed an emergency plan, Careline Telecare will send you a carers' emergency card. This is a credit card-sized card that you may carry around with you at all times. It does not have any personal details on it, only your own reference number and the telephone number of Careline Telecare.
What happens in an emergency?
If something happens to you while you are out of the home, your or anyone finding the carers' emergency card will be able to contact Careline Telrcare and quote your personal reference number.
The Careline Telecare operator will check your emergency plan and contact the people listed to make sure that the person you support is cared for in your absence. if they are unable to contact the people you have nominated, they will make other arrangements so that the person you care for is all right.
