People with dementia can be socially isolated and withdraw from their communities. They may also have difficulties knowing where to go to access help with various problems.
Age UK Camden's Dementia Befrending Service and Dementia Adviser Service help people with dementia to live their lives more fully and independently.
Dementia Befriending Service
Volunteer befrienders provide regular social visits which: help alleviate loneliness; give support to maintain interests and skills; and assist with maintaining links to local community. Individuals are also assisted to flag up any concerns they have as and when they arise and these are signposted to appropriate services.
Befriending can help individuals with dementia develop confidence to initiate ideas for activities, become involved in their communities and further support.
The service prioritises individuals who have little or no other contact with family or friends or support from services.
Dementia Adviser Sercice
The Dementia Adviser Service provides people with dementia and their families with a single point of contact for information, advice, support and help with access to local services. The coordinator visits individuals at home to help them to identify their needs and provides information and signposting to appropriate services.
The service aims to make people with dementia more confident through empowering them to choose what they need and supporting them to make decisions about their lives
Volunteers
Befrienders and Advisers are specifically selected and trained to work with people with dementia and are supported in their role by the project coordinators.
